One of the most powerful tools in todays industry for creating exposure for your website that leads to valuable traffic and powerful wealth building is search marketing. You are not expected to know how to market your website successfully to the search engines, however, which is where the concept of paid search marketing comes into play. Paid search marketing is SEM or search engine marketing services that are being delivered by a company specializing in the production of real results.

Paid search marketing can take a number of different forms but the most prevalent of which is seen in marketing firms that specialize in delivering search engine optimization and search engine marketing services for either a one time or ongoing fee premium. Businesses and individuals that want to improve their search engine exposure in order to drive greater amounts of traffic and larger profit potential to their websites will benefit from the services offered by paid search marketing providers.

- When you choose a paid search marketing firm that offers ongoing management of your search engine marketing endeavors, you can rest assured that your search engine results will only improve rather than decreasing over time because of competitors. Paid search engine marketing firms will consistently and effectively monitor your search engine placement results, ensuring that your needs are consistently met with results.

- Choosing a paid search marketing firm will allow you to offload a complicated part of marketing your business to a specialist who has the experience and expertise to get results. While many business owners can get the hang over basic Search Engine Marketing over time, it is much simpler and even cost effective to allow a professional company to handle the project.

- The more quickly you begin to implement paid search marketing assistance for your website, the more quickly you will see results. So the sooner you choose a paid search marketing service provider, the sooner you will begin to reap the rewards of a greater exposure in search engines for the keywords and phrases that really matter to your business.

- Simply put, paid search marketing delivers results. By seeking out professionals in the search engine marketing industry, you can get the assistance you need in driving large amounts of traffic to your website. Not only does search engine marketing increase website traffic, but it also increases your perceived “authority” on the subject of your website, allowing consumers to better trust the products, services or information that you are selling.

Search engine marketing is one of the most powerful tools that you can have in your business when increasing your exposure online, and drawing more traffic to your business to squeeze out increased profits. The best way to make sure that your ongoing search engine marketing project gets the results that you need is to pursue avenues for paid search marketing. Let the professionals get the job done for you, and you will be satisfied by what is a truly cost effective way to increase the effectiveness of your business all around.

As many of you know, I am not a huge fan of obsessing over Google’s PageRank score as shown in the Google Toolbar.

But whenever there is a Google PageRank update in the toolbar, I feel obligated to report it. Why? Well, as per our purpose, we cover what SEOs and SEMs are discussing in the discussion forums. Whenever there is a PageRank update, SEOs really spend a lot of time and energy discussing it.

So after almost 6 months, Google has finally updated the toolbar PageRank values. At least that is what everyone is reporting in the forums. Personally, I did not look – but based on all the threads and posts, it seems like a global PageRank update was indeed pushed out.

The last one was about 6 months ago, and this comes about a month since Google’s Matt Cutts said a PageRank update is coming soon.

So maybe Google will start updating the PageRank values twice a year instead of quarterly and before that, monthly. Google will continue to downplay PageRank.

According to some WebmasterWorld thread, Panda has strike again. It has been a mixed message when it comes to the name, some people call it “Panda 3.0” and some others “2.1” while Google does not confirm that update.

Apparently, SEOs noticed some changes in the SERPs over the past few days, some minor impacts on rankings and then Google admitted to have tweaked the second “Panda” update.

Here is a quick overview of Panda:

- First update: it was launched on February 24, with purpose to “take down” thin content sites. It has impacted 12% of the rankings in the US. The update was called the “Farmer” update.

- Second update: it was launched on April 11, which impacted another 2% of searches in the US. That updated was released globally affecting all “English queries”.

- Third update: not confirmed yet but apparently launched the first week of May and it only impacted a few searches according to the SEO world.

At SEOme, we advice you to check and crawl your site from top to bottom. Panda is all about Content so here are some tips:

- Check all your crawling errors (you can either noindex or 301 those pages)

- Crawl your site and remove all useless URLs (page with thin content, duplicate content…)

- Make sure your content is relevant and brings value to the user (links pointing to the page or traffic could give you some indications)

While cruising through one of my many forum haunts I couldn’t help but see that the debates over DMOZ submissions and editor applications are still raging on. Questions regarding how corrupt the submission process is have been raging on for years now. Funny how I never heard anything like this before 2000 or so. I had always managed to get a site listed as long as it offered decent content and added value to the growing list of the DMOZ index. Like a light switch being clicked they went from the largest self managed web directory to a gang of corrupt editors sitting in a dark room somewhere planning strategies to punk webmasters and marketers into paying for their listings or get deleted. The submission process became so controversial and getting approved seemingly impossible. Unless of course you’re willing to pay.

One of the leading causes of this is the tied at the hips relationship DMOZ has with Google. With the advent of Googles PR model and the deep linking and high page rank that DMOZ enjoys it has made the directory a “need to have” for marketers and webmasters. Unfortunately this same explosion in popularity has brought with it what appears to be a corrupt editorial staff. Whether it’s blackmailing listed sites for cash or simply ignoring the bulk of submission for whatever reason it’s no wonder DMOZ isn’t trusted these days.

In the forum a member posted that “I think there are no DMOZ editors in this forum. most of the members in this forum have tried to become editors but none have succeeded”.

And true to form a flock of DMOZ editors jumped in to voice their opinions of this statement. None good of course and most quite arrogant and aloof, also true to form.

Note:
I have a question. Why is it that DMOZ editors seem to have a hard time actually editing their categories, yet when someone says something against DMOZ (and the editors), all of a sudden they can rally in opposition like an army of vultures. This is quite an interesting proposition if you think about it. There isn’t enough time to get to all the links, but there seems to be plenty of time to defend their inability to get to all the submissions. It’s something that anyone with an interest should take notice of.

Another posted “Is it so hard to “hire” quality editors ? ”

To which Jim Noble (the Big Kahuna at DMOZ) responded with:
“No, it’s very easy and I’m always happy to do so. Sadly, many applicants are either liars, can’t read or are clearly self serving. Those I decline. Wouldn’t you?”

Well, yes Jim, if this were truly the case. I somehow doubt that it is and I must believe that yours is a statement of convenience rather than plausible.

The better question would be “Why is DMOZ only approving 3-6000 sites a month when there are easily 25x that being submitted?” Would you have us believe that there are only 3-6000 worthy submissions each month? This is exactly why most career webmasters believe DMOZ to be corrupt.

I used to look forward to having a site accepted in the moz, but that was more than 10 years ago when it wasn’t too big to care. It seems that, much like other large online companies, they’ve forgotten who helped to make them what they are. These days submitting to DMOZ is much like following the yellow brick road. It’s easy enough to claim that the submitters are either stupid and can’t read or have no content worth publishing. As for editors; “Sadly, many applicants are either liars, can’t read or are clearly self serving” Quite an arrogant statement if put into perpective. There are 9 people who sincerely want to help for every 1 that wants to “work the system”. While I completely empathize with the issue of editors trying to work DMOZ to their own ends, I also have the common sense to realize what you are really saying.

The most vocal of DMOZ editors smack of the same elitist mentallity, openly and unapologetically. It isn’t DMOZ’ job to expect a certain level of etiquette from its editors, after all they don’t represent you adequately from the mangerial perspective so why should you expect them to in public. This is part of the problem when it comes to having a self policed force of editors. It’s inevitably going to end up with some sort of pecking order where the rules aren’t equally applied to editors, both old and new. You’re trying to make sure new editors aren’t going to steal the eggs while your grandfathered editors have been stealing the chickens for years.

But I digress, it’s too nice a day to ponder such things.

The long awaited regulatory clearance for Microsoft and Yahoo! to  form a search alliance is now fact. The search industry had been  expecting this partnership to materialize for over a year now. The  following is a form letter sent out to both Yahoo! and Bing adCenter  advertisers;

Dated Feruary 18, 2010 11am PST

From Yahoo!

Dear Advertiser,

Yahoo! and Microsoft have now received regulatory clearance to form a search alliance. This is a significant milestone and an exciting first step in our combined effort to help you reach even more customers with greater ease and efficiency.

What’s Ahead
There will be no immediate changes to your Yahoo! Search Marketing account. Both companies are committed to making this transition as seamless and beneficial to you as possible. Our aim is a high quality transition of advertisers and partners in at least the U.S. prior to the 2010 holiday season. However, we may wait until 2011 if we determine this will be more effective. Approximately three months in advance, we’ll begin providing you with detailed information about what to expect and how we will assist you.

How the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance Will Benefit You
Once implemented, the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance will enable you to:

Reach more customers.
Reach up to 150 million searchers1 and get approximately 62% more search volume2 than on Yahoo! alone through a new, unified search marketplace combining the Yahoo! and Microsoft networks. To help drive future growth in search volume, Yahoo! will continue to significantly enhance the search experience on our leading web properties.

Save valuable time and effort.
You’ll log into one place–Microsoft’s adCenter–to manage campaigns, for greater efficiency and a better ROI. With just one buy, you’ll reach users on Yahoo! and Microsoft sites, as well as other premium partner sites.

Benefit from rapid innovation.
Yahoo! will deliver new features and innovations to the world’s favorite online destinations, content, and web products used by hundreds of millions of consumers to connect to the people and things that matter to them most. Microsoft will innovate the underlying technologies that drive high quality algorithmic and paid search results.

We appreciate your business and look forward to bringing the benefits of the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance to you.

Sincerely,

Your Partners at Yahoo!
-end

From Microsoft adCenter

Microsoft® and Yahoo! have now received regulatory clearance to form the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance in the United States and European Union. This milestone is an exciting step in our effort to give your business a time-saving and cost-efficient way to connect with a larger combined audience of potential customers.

How the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance benefits you.

After the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance is implemented, you will:

- Reach more potential customers: Search ad inventory from both the Yahoo! and Microsoft networks will be joined in a new, unified search marketplace powered by Bing™ , with a combined audience of over 150 million searchers in the U.S and nearly 577 million searchers worldwide.

- Save valuable time and effort: You’ll use a single platform—Microsoft adCenter—to manage your campaigns easier and faster. With just one buy, your search ads will reach users on Bing, Yahoo!, and other premium partner sites and networks, such as The Wall Street Journal Digital Network, msnbc.com, FoxSports.com, Facebook, and Buy.com.

What’s ahead
For now, it’s business as usual; there is no change to your account or service. Your ads will continue to serve on Bing search results pages, and you will continue to receive the same great service from Microsoft.

Both companies are committed to making this transition a seamless experience. Our goal is to bring the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance to the U.S. by the end of 2010, prior to the crucial holiday season, with additional countries following on a staggered schedule beginning in 2011.

As our transition dates approach, we will contact you with information about what to do next. In order to ensure you continue to receive important service updates, please verify your contact information is current in Microsoft adCenter. View our help topic: Change contact information.

How to learn more
In the meantime, you can familiarize yourself with the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance by visiting our new resource, searchalliance.com, where you’ll find plenty of additional details, including press releases, FAQs, and more!

We appreciate your business and look forward to bringing you the benefits of the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance.

Sincerely,

The Microsoft adCenter Team
-end

I can only hope that this union will bring about a new era and a more level playing field for small advertisers. Expectations are that Google will be launching a new easier ad manager for the less techincal to setup an Adwords campaign. Will this be enough? I doubt that it will. These companies need to figure out a way to cost effectively bring advertisers into the fold and offer them better returns or there will be an astounding shakeup in the search market. While this is just speculation on my part, the vast majority of advertising dollars comes from the small to medium business. These smaller businesses have been seeking alternate advertising streams (such as Facebook) to gain more ground in their advertising models. A large percentage of Adwords are pumped to levels that offer negative returns. Because of Google using CTR as the primary quality score attribute it has fueled bid pumping just as they intended. The problem is that the smaller advertisers can’t afford to play in the adwords sandbox anymore and you will see a drop in ad dollars because of this.

If this union between #2 and #3 does manage to level the playing field for the smaller advertiser then Google should start worrying.

Google 2.0

Microsofts has been aggressive in marketing their new decision engine BING. With millions being spent on grabbing market share and following up with a new Yahoo deal, it seems Facebook may be jumping into the search game as well. They’ve just aquired Friendfeed which opens the door for developing a full blown search engine. Maybe they’ll call it FaceWeb, anyway, it seems Google has taken notice. After napping on the laurels of their success for several years Google woke up and has been developing a new version of their search engine called Caffeine.

Do we dare to call this Google 2.0?
If you’d like to check it out, you can find the New Google Search Engine Here Update (Parts of Caffeine have been implemented into Google, this link is now dead)

So far there’s only a slight increase in speed, however there are also zero ads being served and this may be what is causing a snappier response. Also, the results are only slightly tweaked. Do a search on the main engine then one on the sandbox and you’ll see a minimal shuffle in results.

Will a bit of speed be enough for Google to fend off the vultures?

I seriously doubt it and I’d have to think that Google has more going on then just a small speed increase here. Googles Matt Cutts is being his usual ninja-self by releasing a lot of seemingly vague news regarding the new engine.

According to Cutts “The Caffeine update isn’t about making some UI changes here or there. Currently, even power users won’t notice much of a difference at all. This update is primarily under the hood: we’re rewriting the foundation of some of our infrastructure. But some of the search results do change, so we wanted to open up a preview so that power searchers and web developers could give us feedback”. -end

To leak a workable test site to the public without any noticeable changes smells a bit like misdirection to me. I’d have to think that Google is working on something far deeper than they’d lead anyone to believe. We’ll see how prophetic this turns out to be in the next few months.

Just some observations about getting listed or becoming an editor on DMOZ

First, I’ve had a couple sites listed in DMOZ, however these were back when DMOZ had about 1m links and a few thousand editors. Back when the workload wasn’t used as an excuse for poor administration and a reason to ignore submissions and link pruning.

I’m not trying to ruffle anyones feathers. There are quite a few editors who really do care about DMOZ (still)…

Now for my observations:

4,615,773 sites – 83,393 editors – over 590,000 categories

That is about 55 links per editor. Throw out 90% of the editors as being the “who cares” types and we are left with about 600 links to manage per editor. I’ve run quite a few directories and managed one that had 8000 categories and 125,000 links with zero help. To say that 8,300 good editors cant manage 4.6m links is absurd.

“It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors.”

The primary DMOZ team seems to hold the strictest of standards for an editor to be accepted, yet you’ll only see a response from them if the “prospective editor” doesn’t meet these standards. If a prospect does meet these standards, unless he/she “knows someone” they can expect to be ignored. The typical good ol’boys network seems to be in play here. I would suggest changing that to “It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of original editors and their buddies who now control every aspect of the thing.”

“Editing categories is a snap. We have a comprehensive set of tools for adding, deleting, and updating links in seconds.”

Wouldn’t this be contradictive to the whole backlogged issue that editors always seem to hide behind?

“The Definitive Catalog of the Web”

Excuse me! If this is the case then why is every 5th link a dead anglefire, att, homestead, geocities, webs, tripod.. etc? And worse yet are those dropped links that now lead to thousands of adult sites.

“The Open Directory follows in the footsteps of some of the most important editor/contributor projects of the 20th century”

Change that to “Followed” because this is now the 21st century and DMOZ hasn’t done a thing to keep up.

“The Open Directory was founded in the spirit of the Open Source movement”

I’ve yet to see another Open Source project become so closed, so I’d suggest that spirit is dead at this point.

“The Open Directory data is made available for free to anyone who agrees to comply with our free use license.”

The keyword here is “comply”, actually it isnt simply to comply, but to jump through hoops until you realise the futility of it all and give up.

Like any community, you get what you give. The Open Directory provides the opportunity for everyone to contribute.

Signing up is easy: choose a topic you know something about and join. Editing categories is a snap. We have a comprehensive set of tools for adding, deleting, and updating links in seconds. For just a few minutes of your time you can help make the Web a better place, and be recognized as an expert on your chosen topic.

Yes, the opportunity to attempt to contribute. I’d honestly suggest that you suspend the volunteer aspect of the thing and send emails to every editor telling them that unless the links are pruned and backlogs either cleared or wiped out that the “editors house” will be cleaned.

You have 4.6m links and 10-15% of those are dead. So let’s say there are 4m “good” links. Youve been around for 14 years. That’s an average addition of about 784 links per day. Do the math… 78,000 editors and you guys are “BACKED UP” with an approval rate of less than 1000 links per day?

That must have been some party for all the editors to be hungover this long.

Finally
On the “About DMOZ” footer

Copyright © 1998-2005 think about this one

Let the rebuttals, the back pedaling, the excuses, the attacks, the blame throwing begin…

However you perceive this post it is not me hating or being bent towards the DMOZ crew. It is merely my observations of what seems to have become a broken entity at least from its original premise. Sometimes you just have to wipe the slate clean and start over and I’m thinking it’s been that time for years as far as the DMOZ directory goes.

Cheers

PS… One of my current DMOZ listings is in a category that has high traffic and only 13 competitors listed. It accounts for less than 1/3rd of 1% of my sites referrals, so DMOZ is really just another directory to me. Just so you’ll understand that I really mean no malice from this post and that it’s simply constructive criticism.

IC Online Services has partnered with BandsandArtists.co.uk to create a free service that lets independant artists, bands, music producers, managers and labels self promote their music. The new sites offer streaming video and audio, artists music vaults and a place to sell beats and tracks. Artists can create custom pages and have their own blog, schedule, interviews and can add their music to the sites radio channels. Tracks can be set to listen only, download or a combination of the two. Downloads can be sold from the artists store or held in the vault until they choose to release the tracks.

The services are only a few days into the development phase and are based on the Jamroom artists cms with heavilly modded oinkba layouts. Artists and listeners can create free premium accounts to comment, post about, follow, listen to the music and watch videos from their favorite independant bands and artists. We are inviting everyone who loves music or is involved in the indie music scene to create their accounts and start getting some free promotion and exposure. All we ask is for some help getting the bugs out of the systems. We are here to help promote and open to suggestions about the services you’d like to see added as we move forward.

Artists from the US and Canada should go to http://www.vxpr.com and if you are in the UK/Europe, you’ll find your own free space waiting for you at http://www.bandsandartists.co.uk

SEOMe has thrown our hat into the sulumits retsambew SEO contest (04-30-09)

What is sulumits retsambew you ask?

sulumits retsambew:

(Sul-ah-mits retz-am-bow) An antigram of “Webmaster Stimulus”. Sulumits retsambew is the targeted keyword term in the latest SEO contest being promoted by Will Spencer and company over at NetBuilders.org “The Better SEO forum” (cheap plug for a good site).

NO this isn’t an anagram.

An anagram is a type of word play, the result of rearranging the letters of a word or phrase to produce a new word or phrase, using all the original letters exactly once; e.g., orchestra = carthorse, Eleven plus two = Twelve plus one, A decimal point = I’m a dot in place. Someone who creates anagrams is called an anagrammatist. The original word or phrase is known as the subject of the anagram.

NO this isn’t a palindrome.

A palindrome is a word, phrase, number or other sequence of units that can be read the same way in either direction (the adjustment of punctuation and spaces between words is generally permitted). EXP “Was it a rat I saw?” <<read it backwards.

An antigram is a word or words that are presented backwards from the original word or phrase without changing the order of the letters or puncuation. EXP “wiki doog a” would be “a good wiki”, “webmaster stimulus” is “sulumits restambew” and so on…

About this seo contest:
The gist of the sulumits retsambew SEO contest is (as with most SEO contests), to get a page to the top of the SERP for the term that is targeted, in this case “sulumits retsambew”, for natural search results, not quoted. Whoever can land on the top 3 positions of the 1st page in Google for sulumits retsambew, wins! Because results may vary from server to server on Googles search network, Will has made it clear that he will use results from various Google servers to be fair about the whole thing.
According to the netbuilders.org website:

Net Builders SEO Contest Rules

Goal: To win, you must place first, second, or third in Google’s organic SERPs for the targeted keywords. Indented listing do not count — each domain can win only one prize.

Start Date: 15 March, 2009

Finish Date: 15 August, 2009 – High Noon GMT

Prizes:

First Place: $1,000
Second Place: $500
Third Place: $250

Contest Entry

To enter the contest, you must post the domain you are entering into the contest in a message here at NetBuilders.

Determination of Winners

I will determine the official winners by using a manual search to google.com. As Google returns different results from different data centers and to different searchers, the results you see may not be the results that I see.

Targeted Keywords: The targeted keywords for our contest are “sulumits retsambew” (without the quotes)

-end

Any person (not employed by Google) is invited to join the sulumits retsambew SEO contest regardless of experience in the marketing and optimization field. Being such a late comer to the sulumits retsambew SEO contest, I thought it would be fun to see where a purely organic optimization could land this page against all the others who started weeks ago with dedicated domains and sub-domains. Rather than using a dedicated URL such as Sulumitsretsambew.com, Sulumits-retsambew.org, Sulumitsretsam.org (which is still available BTW), …etc or a subdomain naming scheme such as sulumitsretsambew.mydomain.com, I’ll run with this simple little page.

I’ll only be using natural methods to promote and market “sulumits retsambew” in my quest to grab 1st page SERP. To be honest I’m not sure how much time will be devoted to this because it’s more of a curiosity than a priority. I’d greatly appreciate it, if anyone would like to help me out in this adventure. Please tweet it or use whichever flavor of social bookmarking site you’d prefer. You’ll be helping me to prove that high SERP can be acheived through completely natural channels.

My progress in the sulumits retsambew seo contest

Update for May 10th 2009:

First things First
Happy Mothers Day!

Considering that I joined the sulumits retsambew seo contest almost 7 weeks after the official start, I was pleasantly surprised to see that I am already 34th (page 4, 4th position SERP) of more than 275,000 returns in a Google search. Keep in mind that I’ll only use organic content driven optimization with an article here and there to send a link back to this page. I’m not sure how many people are playing this game, but of the nearly 10,000 pages returned for “sulumits retsambew seo contest” being 12th isn’t a bad start, IMHO.

Some of the sites that I’ve managed to hop over are keyword oriented domain names that use some form of sulumits retsambew inside the domain itself (sulumitsretsambew.org, sulumits-retsambew.com …etc), while others are using multiple instances of sulumits retsambew within the file naming/paths such as sulumitsretsambew.mydomain.com/sulumitsretsambew/what-is-sulumits-retsambew and so on. Shwew that was a long url to type!

I’m also finding some very creative ways that the term sulumits retsambew is being used in content. For example one site has a complete history of a ficticious character named what else, but Sulumits Retsambew. He was born in 54AD complete with a chronology of Sulumits life. I’m almost positive it was taken from one of the Fatima prophecies. Then there’s another clever person claiming it to be his family name and that his Uncle, also by the name of Sulumits Retsambew is a worldy and colorful person complete with a short history of his life which also includes images. I forgot to check for alt text on those…

UPDATE for May 13th 2009:

I’ve slid just a bit from 34th to 38th position today (sigh), but I’m happy to be where I’m at in such a short period of time on just a page added to this website.

UPDATE for May 21st 2009:

WOW! That’s all I can say. While I’m still sitting in 37th position I can’t feel too bad about the lack of downward movement. When I started in the sulumits restambew contest there were just over 270,000 returns for the term. I’ve expected the returns to climb as the contest started gaining steam, however when I did a search this evening; Results 1 – 10 of about 675,000 for sulumits retsambew. (0.44 seconds) Thats’s over 400,000 more pages using the term in less than 3 weeks. The optimization crews are working overtime to win this thing. I guess I should also be putting more effort into it myself, or I could keep working for my clients and watch sulumits from the sidelines … I’ll take my chances.

UPDATE for June 9th 2009:
What a difference a couple weeks makes! SEOMe.com is on page 2 bottom today at #19 and this is with nearly zero promotion and weathering a glitch with my 404sef url module. We’ve also managed to match this position for the term “sulumits retsambew seo contest”, and while it’s not the term to win with it still carries a bit of a sideways slurp to enjoy.

Update for June 10th 2009
Too funny, I found a new sulumits restambew entry that copied this page verbatim and gave no credit to me for it. Tisk Tisk! At least they stopped at my updates which will keep them from diluting my content strength.

Update for June 28th 2009
The SERP is jumping all over the place for many of the players including me. In the last week SEOMe has jumped from 19th to not in the top 100 to 54th, 49th and today 34th. I can only think this is due to so many new pages being added or updated daily.

Update for July 12th 2009
The sulumits retsambu contest is heading into the final month and is now in the home stretch. This page has managed to climb into 22nd overall and I’m fairly happy to be so high with over 1.9m pages now being returned with the term. I’m still hoping to jump back on to the 2nd page, but with so many others now involved this might be a tough nut to crack. My best position to date is 14th which lasted about 3 days and was wiped out when I had to 301 my original path to this page. We’ll see how it goes.

Update for August 3rd 2009
There’s just 12 days left til the winners are decided in the Sulumits Retsambew SEO Contest. This will be my last post prior to sending this page to a shelf somewhere. With my late start and the new project (http://www.insuranceagency.net), I’m content to still be at #34 as of this writing. While I was able to crack the 2nd page several times, my lack of time to properly market and backlink this page showed. So while I’m not thrilled with my results, I’m actually surprised that my hour of marketing and basic optimization worked as well as it has. Considering the amount of marketers and pages that were ultimately devoted to sulumits, I guess I should be stoked.

My forecast is that www.sulumitsretsambew.org will win, www.sulumits-retsambew-winner.com will come in 2nd by overtaking www.sulumitsretsambewblog.com who will have to duke it out and ultimately beat www.sulumitsretsambew.com for 3rd and the final pay spot. Do backlink checks to see why they’ll place the way they have.

Cheers NetBuilders, it’s been fun.

If anyone would like to copy any part of this page, feel free to. I won’t be hurt if there’s no return link, I’ll be content to know that what I’ve written is worth reposting on other pages. As I’ve said from the beginning, I’m not shooting for top 3 (although that would be great). I’d simply like to qualify as an honorable mention for starting really late, not using a domain or sub-domain name with sulumits restambew in it, zero marketing or backlinking (other than an article or two) and still crashing the 1st or 2nd page.

As predicted sulumitsretsambew.org won. Congratualtions!

Observation:
One scenario that seemingly runs through most SEO Contests is that they are based solely on a keyword phrase and anything goes. Anyone who joins early enough will have a decided advantage if they can register a domain using the keyword phrase. This absolutely skews the results and doesn’t really tell us who has the best skills at marketing a website. I tip my hat to netbuilders.org for putting up $1750 for their sulumits retsambew SEO contest, however I can’t help but consider that a true seo contest should prove a professionals actual marketing skill by removing domain names, path names and existing page rank from the formula to decide on the winner. Let’s face the reality of it, to show who is truly the best you’d have to start with a level playing field and IMHO, one that can’t be swayed by outside factors such as timing.

I’d be interested in establishing a contest where domains are generic numbers and/or characters with a set span of time to rank highest for a keyword phrase. If domain names, paths and pagerank are removed from the formula you’d be left with a purely content and marketing driven contest. This is something that I’ll be pondering over the coming months and just maybe you’ll see a new SEO Contest somtime towards the end of the year or first part of 2010. Based on the purity of marketing and content development skills, I think this would be a building block event.

Please share your thoughts with me on this idea. If I have enough interest I’d be willing to throw some cash into it. If anyone would like to get into the sponsorship/partnership end of such a contest (could be really good for exposure), please contact me and let’s talk.
As you can see I started with nearly a 2 month handicap (disadvantage), so this should be interesting to say the least. More content to come as time permits. If anyone would like to help me prove the virtues of organic content based Search Optimization (and the power of gratuitous begging) please copy the following line and post it wherever you can , without spamming of course.

Check out the <a href=”http://seome.com/sulumits-retsambew”> Sulumits Retsambew SEO Contest</a>
